CPU Usage to 100%

Reported by: glacialfury Assigned to: Billiberserker
Priority: immediate Milestone: 0.8 RC1
Component: Desktop Objects Version: 0.72 (TD2)

Description

SharpDesk? cpu usage spontaneously goes to 100%, crippling system. If you use Task Manager to close SharpDesk?, it appears normal, but as soon as you interact with another component (SharpBar?), that component goes to 100% cpu usage. Must close the shell entirely and reboot computer to "fix" the problem.

Can't find a trigger for what's causing it. It has happened both during normal usage and during World of Warcraft; six times so far.

Have stopped Actions service and SkinController service, will see if happens under these conditions.

Change History

08/15/07 05:41:46 changed by glacialfury

  • owner set to Pixol.
  • component changed from General SharpE to Services.

It is actions; didn't take more than half an hour I think after I switched it on that it happened.

Also, it's not just SharpE. It always starts with SharpDesk?. Then, as usual, I clicked on SharpBar?, and it propagated to that.

1) I closed down SharpE entirely.
2) I clicked on a My Desktop window I had open. It jumped to that.
3) Then I clicked on my miranda window. It jumped to Miranda. I closed Miranda.
4) I clicked on my open firefox window. It jumped to THAT.
5) I opened Miranda again; no problems.
6) I opened Firefox again; no problems.
7) I clicked on daemontools in the systray. CPU jumped to 100 on daemon tools.

So what seems to be happening is that it will jump to any application that is open at the time of first occurrence. Programs you initiate *after* the bug starts happening are not affected, but any application that is already running (that you focus, in my case with the mouse) will be affected. Due to this, the only effective way to reset the bug is by rebooting.

System is currently stable with all services running except Actions. It will consistently produce this bug if I turn actions service back on.

Windows XP SP2, SharpE TD2 refresh.

Because life likes complications, I have turned on SharpConsole? and then restarted all services to catch the bug in action. Since that point, it has not occurred.

I will reboot and attempt to get the bug to reproduce. It's frustrating because it was exactly reproducible before and now is gone :/

This occurs using the daily binary build from 27.08.07 as well.

Next test will be to close SharpDesk? and leave everything else running, to see if SharpDesk? initiates it. SharpDesk? is *always* the first component to hit the bug so far.

(Date: 29.08.07) I should have noted, it has occurred in the following configurations:

Actions running, SkinController running
Actions running, SkinController not running
Actions not running, SkinController running
Actions not running, SkinController not running

Current testing state is:
All services running, SharpDesk? not running. No cpu bug yet, has been running for approximately 55 hours, using binary build from 27.08.07.

(Date 30.08.07)

No crash from 27.08.07 - 30.08.07 with SharpDesk? closed, all services running.

16:35 EST

  • Renamed \Settings\User\()\SharpDesk?\Sets.xml to *.xml_backup
  • Restarted SharpDesk?; confirmed no Desk Objects on desktop.
  • Sets.xml was regenerated by SharpDesk?, contains no objects.

09/04/07 05:58:42 changed by glacialfury

  • owner changed from Pixol to Billiberserker.
  • component changed from Services to Desktop Objects.

31.08.07: Restarted SharpDesk?, deleted all desktop objects. No bug.

02.09.07: Added 100 Link DesktopObjects?. No bug.

04.09.07: Removed all Link objects. Added 100+ RecycleBin? Desktop objects. Bug occurred within 1 minute.

Seems RecycleBin? desktop object is our traitor.

Continues to be a problem with TD3, as of 22 September 2007.

Deleting Recycle Bin desktop object solves.
